Physio First Rehab Physiotherapy in Ilford

Stroke rehabilitation physiotherapy

Physiotherapy to rebuild walking, balance, arm use and independence after a stroke, usually starting at home.

After a stroke, families often feel that support ends just as their relative is starting to make progress. Our physiotherapists can start treatment quickly and keep going for as long as it is helping.

What we work on

  • Sitting and standing balance, and getting in and out of bed and chairs safely
  • Walking, with or without aids, and managing stairs
  • Strength and control in the weaker arm and leg
  • Reducing stiffness and spasticity
  • Reducing the risk of falls
  • Confidence, stamina and getting back to everyday activities

How we work with families

We set goals that matter to the patient, such as walking to the kitchen, managing the stairs or getting to the shops, and show family members and carers how to help with exercises safely between visits. We give regular updates on progress, so everyone knows what is working.

One family told us their father had not received the immediate care he needed after his stroke, and that our team was able to start treatment straight away and help him reach his goals. Read their story.

At home or in the clinic

Most stroke rehabilitation starts with home visits (£110). As walking and confidence improve, some patients move on to clinic sessions.

If someone shows signs of a stroke, such as a drooping face, arm weakness or slurred speech, call 999 immediately.

Common questions

Is it too late for physiotherapy if the stroke was months or years ago?

Not necessarily. Most recovery happens in the first months, but many people continue to improve strength, walking and confidence with the right practice long after.

Can you treat my relative at home?

Yes. Most of our stroke rehabilitation is done at home, where we can practise real tasks such as stairs, getting out of a chair and moving around the house.

Will you work alongside the NHS team?

Yes. Private physiotherapy can add extra sessions alongside NHS community rehabilitation or continue once it ends. We are happy to share progress with your GP.

How often should sessions be?

Regular, frequent practice matters most after a stroke. We usually suggest one to three sessions a week plus exercises to do between visits.
