Acupuncture has been practised for well over two thousand years. Modern, physiotherapist-led acupuncture is based on research into how needling affects the nervous system: it helps modulate pain signals in the brain and spinal cord and prompts the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. That pain relief creates a window in which exercise and hands-on treatment work better.
What it can help with
- Muscle and soft tissue pain
- Low back pain and pain in the upper back and neck
- Frozen shoulder
- Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- Some headaches and migraines
- Muscle tightness and trigger points from sport or posture
What happens in a session
We check your medical history first to make sure needling is safe for you. With you lying or sitting comfortably, your physiotherapist inserts a small number of fine, sterile, single-use needles. They usually stay in for up to 20 to 30 minutes for acupuncture, or a shorter time for dry needling. We usually combine needling with manual therapy and exercise in the same appointment.
Electro-acupuncture
For some patients we connect the needles to a gentle electrical stimulator, which can increase the pain-relieving effect. More on electrotherapy.
Price
First session £65, follow-up sessions £60. See all prices.

Common questions
What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
Both use the same fine needles. Acupuncture places them at set points along the body; dry needling targets tight, tender knots in muscle (trigger points). Your physiotherapist will choose the approach that suits your problem.
Does it hurt?
Most people feel a brief pinprick, then a dull ache or tingling where the needle is. It is usually much less uncomfortable than people expect.
Is it safe?
When given by a trained practitioner using sterile single-use needles, serious side effects are rare. Mild bruising or tiredness afterwards can happen. Tell us if you are pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners or have a pacemaker.
How many sessions will I need?
Many people feel a difference within two to four sessions. We combine needling with other treatment, so you are not relying on it alone.
